Architectural Design 3

The module emphasizes on ‘experiencing space and place’ in architecture. In the subject, students are introduced to, firstly, an exploration of spatial typologies and poetics in architecture; and secondly, the concept of neighbourhood and community. In their preliminary design work, students engage with studies and design of different spatial typologies (i.e. linear, spiral, spine, centric, etc.) for a simple dwelling space which explores the idea of architectural tectonics and experiences. Subsequently, the major project involves the design of a small scale community building (e.g. gallery, small library) in the open landscape/suburban condition which engages with the spirit of place inherent within the site, the site topography, history and socio-cultural events. The design work explores the plan-section integration to achieve architectural form that is tectonically expressive, functional and responsive to its site. At the same time, design exercise relates to spaces with values and culture, while emphasizing the role of the society in the creative architectural design process.

Self-Reflection

SELF-REFLECTION

In this module, there are three projects I learnt how to develop an awareness of a more comprehensive place, a genius loci (town, countryside, coast), and the design response towards the place. Next, I learned to emphasize the importance of site and program in architectural design. Third, I learnt how to introduce different spatial typologies in architectural design (spatial organization and relationships). Fourth, I learnt how to emphasize the importance of sections in architectural space design.

Project 1:

Experiencing Space

IMPERMANENCENCE GALLERY - The textured walls and sunlight at the center of the gallery create a sense of intensity upon entering. Which therefore act to amplify the emotion the user experiences throughout their journey. The first gallery space is lined with rough concrete walls that help sportically reflect light coming from the large window and therefore resulting in the feeling of intensity. This space represents the feeling of familiarity and comfort which is evident as each wall has its own characteristic making each space more easily identifiable.

The outdoor pathway of trees is an ever changing space given enough time. From the gradient of the light reflecting on the concrete, to the shadow patterns cast by the trees throughout the day. At a larger scale nature and time is used to represent the process of change, as trees constantly lose and regrow their leaves throughout the 4 seasons.

The second gallery space at the bottom of the structure stands in complete contrast to the first. If the first space represents familiarity then this space represents the effects of change. The below walls are much more smooth with each wall being the same as the last. Without the obvious pathways it would be difficult to navigate the space due to the uniformity of the walls and therefore this places with the idea of unfamiliarity and change. In spite of that the space still manages to create a feeling of serenity due to the reflection of light on the smooth concrete wall. Like a stone in a river, given time, the walls' concrete eventually become smooth - In the context of people, given enough time they become less rough and eventually mature. This space shows that even though changes occur it is not something to be afraid of and should even be - in some cases - embraced.

Project 2a :

Experiencing Place - 'Genius Loci’ - Site Analysis & Concept Development

In project 2a, we are required to analyse the macro site and microsite, which is the Ruin site and Reservoir site. Kampung Baru Machap Baru is the largest Chinese New Village in Malacca, approximately 20km from the city. As the majority population of the village is Hakka, the visitors can experience the culture of the Hakkas, such as their signature dish, "Lei Cha". The village still maintains its original condition when it was established due to the limited development space as it is located next to a water dam. The village is influenced by the architectural design elements of various races, such as the Malay and Chinese. This is a testament to the multi-racial society back at that time, who lived in peace and tranquillity. By doing both of the research, I have a concept want to create a place for them to gather at the centre part of the building and use the form and the material can find in the Machap Baru shophouse. Three main spaces are a foyer, cafe and library, and they can gather at the central part of the building. After these three spaces, they can access the observation and contemplation space to digest themselves.

Project 2b :

Experiencing Place - The Memory Repository

In project 2b, we must design a memory repository to provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the site's culture, history, memory, essence, provides accommodation to house and displays relevant material and interpretive material for the public access and information. The name of my design is WAY OF PREDECESSORS to show the transformation from the past to the present, from gathering people together. Place three blocks surrounding the centre of the part, which can bring people access to the centre of the site to connect them. The Architecture will show the old design with the wood panelling, which is designed in the exterior part of the cafe and gets modern throughout the following two blocks, which is the gallery and the library spaces.
